Raised by her dedicated single mother, Jaquita Blunt, Dasia has benefited immensely from Jaquita’s tireless efforts to provide a nurturing environment. Recognizing the importance of mentorship, Jaquita allowed Jaz Ellison from Healing Tree to take an active role in Dasia's life, guiding her in both personal development and education.
Under Jaz's mentorship, Dasia has gained valuable insights into the dangers of HIV and broader life lessons, empowering her to make informed choices for her future. We are proud to announce that Dasia Porter is graduating with honors from North Lawndale College Prep, a school where Ms. Ellison serves. Dasia’s achievements reflect not only her hard work and dedication but also the collective efforts of a community committed to uplifting its youth.
CHAQUAL SMITH
Chaqual Smith, a Chicago native, has emerged as a beacon of resilience and academic achievement, shaped by her experiences in a single-parent household. Raised by a devoted mother, Chaqual benefited from the unwavering support of a nurturing community, including the Healing Tree Community Foundation, which played a crucial role in her development. Her commitment to education is evident in her impressive academic journey; after earning her Master’s degree, she is now pursuing a doctoral degree. Chaqual’s story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating how determination and community engagement can empower individuals to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
DENESHA WILLIAMS
Denesha Williams exemplifies the transformative power of mentorship and dedication to the field of nursing. Through the support of the Healing Tree Community Foundation, Denesha has navigated her educational journey with remarkable commitment and resilience. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Rush University College of Nursing, where she distinguished herself as a student leader. Currently serving as a registered nurse specializing in perioperative care, Denesha applies her knowledge and skills to improve patient outcomes and enhance the quality of care. Her accomplishments not only reflect her personal dedication but also serve as an inspiring model for her peers and future nursing professionals. MARI KENT
Mari Kent is an esteemed alumna of Alabama A&M University, where she graduated with honors, achieving a position ahead of her class. Her academic pursuits are marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence and intellectual rigor. During her tenure at the university, Mari pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the pioneering historically African American sorority, celebrated for its dedication to scholarship, leadership, and community service. Her involvement with AKA fostered a profound sense of sisterhood and a steadfast commitment to service.
A significant influence in Mari's life has been Jaz Ellison, who has served as both Dean at Kellman Elementary and founder of the Healing Tree Community Foundation. Ms. Ellison has been an exemplary role model since Mari was 13, providing vital resources and support essential for navigating complex life situations. Through her foundation, Ms. Ellison created a nurturing environment for our youth, imparting essential disciplinary skills and instilling a resilient belief that failure is not an option. Marin attributes much of her personal growth and maturity to Ms. Ellison's guidance and steadfast support, which have been pivotal in her ability to excel Kent's accomplishments are a testament to her diligence, ambition, and the strong foundation she has built for her future contributions to both her field and the broader community.
