Healing Tree Community Foundation: Tackling Challenges in the LGBTQ and Youth Communities
Our LGBTQ and youth communities face numerous challenges, including homelessness, escalating crime rates, and the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. Recognizing these critical issues, the Healing Tree Community Foundation has developed comprehensive curriculums to address violence and promote safety. Our STAND DOWN program, for instance, equips young people with essential tools to navigate interactions with authority figures respectfully and safely. Let's create a common ground and stand down.
As of 2024, HIV/AIDS remains a significant global health crisis, globally 39.0 million, 1.2 millions worldwide. Healing Tree Community Foundation understands the urgent need for robust HIV education and prevention initiatives. We recognize that fighting the spread of HIV requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses education, breaking down societal barriers, dispelling myths, and fostering a culture of empathy and understanding.
Our slogan, Don't be a chimp no ones exempt HIV...has No! color, underscores our commitment to universal HIV education and prevention. Our programs are designed to be informative, engaging, and tailored to the specific needs of diverse communities, catering to both youth and adults.
We employ a holistic approach to HIV education, covering critical topics such as transmission, prevention, testing, and destigmatization.
Through workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions, we provide participants with accurate information about HIV, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health. For youth, our educational initiatives extend beyond traditional classroom settings. We meet young people where they are—whether in schools, community centers, or online platforms. With dynamic and age-appropriate curricula, Healing Tree addresses not only the biological aspects of HIV but also the social and emotional dimensions, fostering resilience and empathy among youth.
Our prevention programs emphasize safe practices, regular testing, and access to healthcare resources. By collaborating with healthcare providers and community organizations, we ensure that individuals at risk have the knowledge and tools necessary to protect themselves and others.
We understand that the impact of HIV extends beyond individuals to the entire community. By addressing root causes such as stigma and discrimination, we aim to create a supportive environment where those affected by HIV can access care without fear of judgment. Through our initiatives, we strive to break the cycle of transmission, reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, and build resilient, informed communities free from the devastating effects of the disease.
Our commitment to education, prevention, and community support reflects a comprehensive approach to addressing the complexities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Healing Tree Community Foundation is dedicated to creating a healthier, more compassionate world for everyone.
WHEN I TOOK MY LAST BREATHE
I grew up in Kentucky under the care of my grandmother alongside my sister. At the tender age of 14, I became a mother, and by 16, I had two sons. However, my life took a drastic turn when I had a blood transfusion which led to the discovery of a life-altering diagnosis: HIV .Struggling with the weight of this secret, I chose to keep my diagnosis hidden from my family and loved ones. Amidst my personal turmoil, I found love with a young man. However, the fear of revealing my HIV status to him loomed over me, casting a shadow on our relationship. Tragically, when my partner learned the truth, the relationship turned dark, culminating in a harrowing and violent event that left me fighting for my life. Unfortunately, I didn’t make It I took my last breath March -2003 "BabySIs"...

PHYLLIS RODGERS
Peer Plus began when Ms. Rodgers became a case manager—the first and only person of color on the clinical team—at the former Sable/Sherer Clinic at Cook County Hospital. She successfully managed a caseload of 300+ ex-offenders from the county Department of Corrections and the general population. In later years, she supervised a team of 25 HIV-positive adults through the Volunteer Services at the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center and reintroduced them to their communities as health workers and advocates for others who were HIV-positive. She has served on the board of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and as the coordinator of the AIDS Walk for all Cook County employees.
Ms. Rodgers' vast experience as a community and patient advocate laid the foundation for Peer Plus. A cancer survivor, she has committed her talents to change patient experiences and to create much-needed conversations and outcomes. In 2016 she was certified as an Ambassador with the Washington-based PCORI (Patient-Centered Research Outcomes Institute) and in 2017 became a member of the Patient Brigade with the University of Illinois Cancer Center. In honor of Black History Month 2020, Peer Plus forged an historic partnership with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and collaborated to co-host a community forum, “A Conversation about the Facts, Figures and Cultural Diversity in Oncology,” which underscored the urgent need for people of all colors to participate in clinical trials.
To improve skills that serve communities disproportionately impacted by the Corona virus, Ms. Rodgers has also completed the ASTHO training for Contact Tracing for COVID-19. Known as the “go-to” person on healthcare information, she makes it a priority to stay current on healthcare issues through trainings and workshops for herself and Peer Plus volunteers.
